Course curriculum

The training consists of two modules: Module 1 covers the Privacy Rule and Breach Notification Rule, highlighting HIPAA's history, the definition of business associates, the significance of Protected Health Information (PHI), the appointment of a Privacy Officer, the "five rights" under HIPAA, and relevant case studies. Module 2 focuses on the Security Rule and the associated criminal penalties, defining information security and detailing the requirements for Administrative, Technical, and Physical Safeguards. This module also reviews major breach cases, highlights the importance of adherence to HIPAA regulations, and examines the potential legal ramifications under state tort law for HIPAA violations.

Michelle Barki

Senior Legal Counsel

Michelle Barki, Esq., RN, has over twenty-five years of experience in the compliance and health care industries. She served as a Claims Director and Director of Health Services for several managed care and health maintenance organizations and Director of Operations for a third-party administrator for self-funded employers, before attending law school. She also served as Chief Compliance Officer for a leading Hospice organization in Northeast Florida. Michelle has worked as a practicing attorney for over fifteen (15) years and has extensive experience in ERISA Law and Criminal Litigation. She is also well-versed in HIPAA and has been involved in HIPAA Compliance since the law's inception. Michelle graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Concordia University in Montreal. She holds an R.N. Degree from Florida State College at Jacksonville and attained her J.D., with Honors, from Florida Coastal School of Law. She is a member of the Florida Bar and a member of the Health Law Section, the Labor and Employment Law Section, and the Tax Law Section of the Florida Bar.
